Procter & Gamble Moves From Soap Operas To Tweets

Procter & Gamble Co., whose sponsorship and production of daytime TV dramas helped coin the term "soap operas," has pulled the plug after 77 years. Instead, the maker of Tide detergent, Ivory soap and Olay skincare is following its customers online with a big push on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

"The digital media has pretty much exploded," marketing chief Marc Pritchard said in an interview. "It's become very integrated with how we operate, it's become part of the way we do marketing."

The last P&G-produced soap opera, "As The World Turns," went off the air in September. The show was the leading daytime soap for decades, but had lost some two-thirds of its audience at the end.
Over the years, P&G produced 20 soap operas for radio and TV. But ratings for daytime dramas have been sinking for years, as women, their target audience, increasingly moved into the workplace, switched to talk and reality shows, and spent more time using online media and social networking sites.

P&G, the world's biggest advertiser, still buys individual commercials on daytime dramas. But the dollar amount has shrunk. P&G won't say by how much.

Dori Molitor, whose WomanWise LLC agency specializes in marketing brands to women, says big companies are realizing that social media is an efficient way to connect with customers.

"Social media has become mass media, and for women especially," she said. "I think for all marketers, these one-way, 30-second (TV) spots are very expensive, and are less effective for the way that women make decisions."

Marketing experts say the biggest companies were generally slow to adapt to the rapid rise of social networks, but that beverage rivals Coca-Cola Co. and Pepsico Inc., and P&G and fellow consumer products makers Unilever PLC and Johnson & Johnson are among those quickly making up for lost time.

In recent months, P&G began selling Pampers diapers on Facebook, offering an iPhone application for Always feminine products that allows women to track menstrual cycles and ask experts questions, and using social media to turn a campaign for the venerable Old Spice brand into a pop-culture icon.

The "Smell like a Man, Man" commercials starring hunky former football player Isaiah Mustafa became a YouTube sensation, drawing tens of millions of views and spawning parodies such as one with Sesame Street's Grover, and generated another round of attention with Twitter questions that Mustafa answered in videos — such as on ABC's Good Morning America when he suggested that President Barack Obama could improve standing with female voters by wearing only a towel and beginning speeches with "Hello, Ladies!"
The echo effect gives P&G a bigger bang for its nearly 9 billion bucks a year spent on advertising.

"It is such an effective advertising campaign that we are getting impressions that we did not pay for," CEO Bob McDonald told investors recently, recounting that he saw an editorial cartoon showing Obama on horseback, a takeoff on Mustafa's "I'm on a horse" Old Spice catch-phrase.

For a company known for measuring just about everything, P&G touts big numbers from Old Spice tracking:

— Number of impressions (people who saw, read, or heard about commercials): 1.8 billion.

— Number of YouTube views for Old Spice and related videos: 140 million and counting.

— Increase in Twitter followers for Old Spice: 2,700 percent.

P&G also said Old Spice sales are growing at double digits, taking more of the market for body washes and deodorant.

Just 20 months ago, P&G hosted "digital night" at its Cincinnati headquarters by inviting Google, Facebook, Twitter and other online experts to help test ways online and digital media could be used in marketing. By the Vancouver Winter Olympics last February, P&G was coordinating TV commercials with Facebook messages and tracking instant reactions to new commercials on Twitter.

P&G, which sponsored Team USA, unveiled sentimental "Thank you, Mom!" commercials at the Olympics that it estimates added $100 million in sales. The campaign has included Facebook essay contests and e-Cards for mothers.
P&G says it's still exploring new uses for social media.

"It's kind of the oldest form of marketing — word of mouth — with the newest form of technology," Pritchard said.

Michael Park to Return to the Broadway Stage

When the curtain rises on the revival of How to Succeed in Business (Without Really Trying) this coming spring, Michael Park will appear as Bert Bratt in the production according to CBS Soaps in Depth.

Heading the cast will be Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame in his Broadway debut along with Emmy winner John Larrroquette. Previews begin on February 26 with the official opening March 27 at the Al Hisrchfeld Theatre.

This will be Micheal's 4th appearance on a Broadway stage having previously appeared in Carousel, Little Me and Smokey Joe's Cafe.

Former As the World Turns writer Susan Dansby interviewed Ellen Dolan about how she got her job on As the World turns.

Ellen Dolan was born and raised in Iowa, earned her BA and MFA degrees in theatre from the University of Iowa. While working toward her Bachelor's degree, she spent a summer studying dramatic arts at the Webber Douglas Academy in London.

Her stage career began in repertory theater with such roles as Katrin in Mother Courage.Other regional productions such as Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, May in How the Other Half Loves, and Cleya in The Nerd. She was a founding member of the Studio 3 Group, and is currently a member of the Workshop Theatre Group.

Off-Broadway she starred in Sophistry and I Forgive You, Ronald Regan, and has worked in episodic television on such shows as Law and Order SVU.

Ellen joined As the World Turns as policewoman, Margo Hughes, in November 1989, having been asked to consider the part by the late Doug Marland, who was the head writer for the CBS daytime drama.

Marland had created Dolan's former role of Maureen Bauer on Guiding Light. Dolan debuted on Guiding Light in 1982, portraying the character of Maureen Bauer for the next four years.

Her additional television credits include the made-for-television movies, Mother's Day, Mothers, Daughters and Lovers with Helen Shaver, and Dancing with Danger with Cheryl Ladd.

Jake Silbermann Cast in Off-Broadway production of Dracula

Off Broadway is giving vampires a go. “Dracula,” the 1927 Hamilton Deane-John L. Balderston play based on Bram Stoker’s novel, which had a hit revival on Broadway in 1977 starring Frank Langella, will have a 13-week run at the Little Shubert Theater starting Dec. 14, with an opening night scheduled for Jan. 5, 2011.

The company will star Michel Altieri in the title role. The cast will also include George Hearn (Abraham Van Helsing), Thora Birch (Lucy Seward), Timothy Jerome (Dr. Seward), Jake Silbermann (Jonathan Harker), and John Buffalo Mailer (Renfield).

Ann Guilian is Harris’s wife, Lorraine, who teaches yoga to convince herself she’s not rich and superficial; Rachel Ann Jones is Leila Stanton, Lorraine’s pal, who always heads straight for the bar; Jon Lindstrom is particularly convincing as Warren Stanton, Leila’s confident, take-charge husband, who has some unfortunate ideas about how to keep an eye on your children; and Justin’s little sister, Abigail, is played by Willa DeRose, a fine little actress who is just plain adorable.

Frank Runyeon's One-Man Show

Television actor Frank Runyeon spent decades on the small screen as a familiar face on popular daytime and prime time series.

He is best known for his seven years as Steve Andropoulos on the CBS soap opera "As the World Turns" opposite actress Meg Ryan, who became his TV wife in 1984. He also spent four years as Father Michael Donnelly on the Emmy Award winning "Santa Barbara," before appearing for a season as tycoon Simon Romero on ABC's "General Hospital" opposite actress Emma Samms.

(Having also played roles as a priest) His "holy roles" were never much of a performance stretch, since he had always wanted to join the seminary to become a Roman Catholic priest.

On Sept. 17, after 54 years of backstabbing, bitchery and tune-in-tomorrows, “As the World Turns” followed its sister soap “Guiding Light” into an ever-expanding universe of defunct daytime melodrama. In 1990 an average daily soap viewership of 6.5 million could choose among 12 network serials. Today, according to a recent report in Advertising Age, average viewership hovers well below 1.5 million, with six soaps left on the air. When production at the “As the World Turns” studio in Brooklyn halted in June, New York was left with only one soap — “One Life to Live,” on ABC — and hundreds of actors plotting their next real-life story lines.

“It’s the loss of a creative environment as much as a loss of paychecks,” said Trent Dawson, whose hapless, occasionally cross-dressing Henry Coleman gave “As the World Turns” some comic relief and the actor a schedule that allowed him to moonlight at the Baltimore Centerstage theater. Mr. Dawson, 39, is currently appearing in Vaclav Havel’s “Memorandum” at the Beckett Theater, Off Broadway.

Since 1949, when the DuMont network first broadcast the 15-minute daytime serial “A Woman to Remember” from the small basement studio of Wanamaker’s department store in Manhattan, generations of New York actors found in soaps a combination of training, money and camaraderie that isn’t likely to be replaced. In addition to dozens of regular cast members, “As the World Turns” hired as many as 50 extras and day players per week, said Christopher Goutman, the last executive producer of the show.

New York, he said, “will have a lot more actors waiting tables.”

“You go from making basically $400 an hour to $400 a week,” said Michael Park, 42, the “As the World Turns” star who won a 2010 Daytime Emmy Award for his portrayal of the good-guy cop Jack Snyder, “and you pray that there’s something else down the line.” Mr. Park is now appearing Off Broadway in “Middletown” at the Vineyard Theater, in his third stage production since the soap ended.

So far three of Mr. Park’s former colleagues (Maura West, Daniel Cosgrove and Terri Colombino) have found full-time soap work, and of those only Ms. Colombino has managed to stay in New York. (She begins on “One Life to Live” on Nov. 29.) She said she took a pay cut in her move from the fictional burgs of Oakdale to Llanview.

'One Life to Live' Casts New A Joey

Actor Tom Degnan, best known for a small, but integral, role on 'As the World Turns,' has beat out some rumored big name stars to land a plum soap role. Degnan is going to be the new Joey Buchanan on 'One Life to Live,' the same part that Nathan Fillion ('Castle') played with so memorably.

Degnan appeared on 'ATWT' in 2009. He was part of the Tom-Margo story line involving her son, Adam, who was presumed dead in Afghanistan. Adam resurfaced in Oakdale as a character named Riley Morgan, but he was actually Margo's son ... with a new face. Degnan's first airdate on 'OLTL' is tentatively set for November 24.

Months of wondering who was going to fill the role of Marissa Chandler since All My Children’s decision to let-go of Brittany Allen has come to an end. Word from the AMC show spokesperson today is that the role has been recast with former As the World Turns star Sarah Glendening who played Lucy on the now defunct CBS soap.

Sarah is on contract and will debut on air on the December 20th episode in the role of Marissa, while Brittany Allen’s last airdate will be December 17th.

The festival will run Nov. 4-11 at the Fleur Cinema and Cafe. It will feature a noncompetitive showcase of movies shot in Iowa, plus a full slate of films in competition for festival prizes.

Former ATWT Actors Featuered in 'The Bay'

The new web seires, The Bay, follows the life of socialite Sara Garrett and the people around her. THE BAY is a new independent soap opera in the vein of Aaron Spelling's 1980s classic primetime hit, DYNASTY. Filled with sex, lies, scandal and everything required to make a hot dramatic series, THE BAY premiered on September 15, 2010.

Featired in the cast are several former As the World Turns actors. Real Andrews (Walker Daniels), Dylan Bruce (Chris Hughes), Marie Wilson (Meg Snyder), Lesli Kay (Molly Conlan), Nicholas Coster (Eduardo Grimaldi) and Mary Beth Evans (Sierra Montgomery) who is also a producer of the series.

Save Our Soaps Rally Update!

The day of the rally is upon us. If you possibly can attend, please do so. Reportedly CNN will be covering it so a big crowd is needed. It's doubtful it will change the mind of anyone at CBS but it just might get somebody from a different network or cable channel to take notice and consider picking up the show. At least it's worth a try! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

There are more details on Facebook. If you belong to Facebook make sure you have done an RSVP to let them know you are attending. However that isn't necessary. Everyone that can help is needed. So please show up if you can. The details are also in the post immediately below this one.

It would probably be an excellent time to remind TeleNext and P&G that we still want a new home! So please send postcards! If anyone can get a good picture of the rally and let us know, we'll be happy to also make it into a postcard.

For everyone interesting in Saving Our Soaps, please come join us in front of CBS studios NY on April 16th when we rally in protest of our soaps being canceled. Our Love for Guiding Light and As The World Turns should unite us, and tell CBS we will not stand for them canceling these beautiful American Icons we have made our family over the decades.

We will meet outside at 2pm wearing red. Hopefully we can get the media involved which might draw the interest of other networks to pick them up.

For those coming, we could also meet in at the Today Show in Rockefeller Center to try and get on live TV in the morning.

It is going to take hundreds. The last rally didn't produce many fans, let's show them this time we mean business. It's not too late fans, let's get our soaps back once and for all !!!

Send Soap Wrappers to SAVE OUR SOAP CAMPAIGN!

Important Update:

The target date has passed but please feel free to continue to send in the postcard or wrappers only. Let them know we support them so please support us!

Some fans on the SOS GL/ATWT campaign have been sending soap to CBS. One person says she got a visit from the FBI asking why she was doing this and asked to stop as it worried CBS that it was anthrax. Some people were concerned about this so we have an alternate option.

Please send just the wrapper. Carefully take the wrapper off the bar of soap and you can wipe off any residue. Then mail that along with a card so they know why you are sending this. You could actually do this with multiple soap type of products from Procter & Gamble and at the same time still use the product yourself. You can also cut labels out. The important thing is to let them know that we use their soap, so please save our SOAP! Please don't threaten not to use their products but rather show them we support them so please support our effort and find a new home for As the World Turns. Feel free to send labels instead of a bar of soap which should alleviate the security concern. The main thing is they receive lots and lots so they know we want them to try even harder to find a new home for ATWT.

You can also just send a postcard if you are more comfortable with that. Just please send something!

We must make our voices heard and show Procter & Gamble we really don't want the World to stop turning and that we hope they are serious in their efforts to find a new home to air the show. They have said they are trying, let's encourage them to try harder.

The mailing date is January 20 - 23.

Please try to send Procter & Gamble brand of soap wrappers from them which include:

You can sometimes find some of these cheaply in dollar stores so you may want to check there.

Include a card or wapper indicating what this is about.

We have some graphics that can be printed and attached to the wrapper. Please leave the original wrapper on if you actually send soap so they can see its a P&G brand, but this wrapper would go over that so they know why they are receiving the soap. We also have some cards that can be put in the envelope as an alternate idea. Either is fine to use. It's important they know why they are getting these wrappers. You can find the graphics HERE.

Help us spread the word.

We have had a great response but it's essential we send thousands of soap wrappers to P&G to make an impression. We really need everyone's help in getting the word out for this campaign. Please tell your friends and family as well as posting on forums, Twitter, Blogs, Facebook or anywhere else you can think of. We really need everyone's help in this. If we do nothing, nothing will happen.

Let's make sure those voice are heard. We need to speak out, collectively and often, to any and all possible homes for ATWT. As fans, we must prove not only do we watch, but we will continue to watch. That the investment any new outlet makes in our World will pay big dividends to that new network.

And one doesn't have to be a watcher of As the World Turns to support the effort to save the show. Fans of any daytime soap need to take heed. Soaps as a whole are in trouble. The domino effect started with the cancellation of Guiding Light and is continuing now with As the World Turns. As one falls, all the others find themselves weakened. So no matter which show is your favorite, a united front is now very much needed.

In January a group of fans are working together to mail small globes to Lifetime to encourage them to add As the World Turns to their lineup. We will work to support them in this effort. A date will be determined so we can all do this at once. In the meantime though keep an eye out for small globes that can be sent. Check dollar stores, craft stores, toy stores etc. They have found some inexpensive globes that can be purchased online at Oriental Trading. These are a terrific option but feel free to find other options too. Any types of globes will get the point across!

Reaction to the Cancellation of ATWT From the Cast & Crew

Tears, gasps and sighs filled the studio as cast, crew, maintenance, security, the whole As the World Turns family stood on the Metro set and listened to the sad news. The North American TV Programming Manager of P&G, Pat Gentile, had just explained how As the World Turns would not be renewed for the 2010-2011 programming year. Every word after turned into a jumble, leaving us with a somber and weary feeling as if our grandparents just passed away. We returned to our workday only to find that we were not the only people to hear the news as the phone began to ring off the hook with calls ranging from fans to actors asking if the news was true.

A new lease on life for "As the World Turns"

“Lifetime Television is interested in picking up the show,” the insider says. “They had wanted to pick up and continue on with Guiding Light, but at the time CBS announced its cancellation, Lifetime had already completed its lineup for the upcoming season, so it was too late. But this time, CBS has given advance notice in the hope that Lifetime or any other network is interested in picking up the show.”

Taping for As the World Turns ends in June next year and the last show is set to air in September but the cast is cautiously optimistic that they will find a new home for their soap.

“We’re all really hoping the show gets picked up,” Grayson McCouch, who plays Dusty Donovan, told our setsider. “There's a good chance it will! We are doing everything we can to get it to another network. So we are hopeful.

Last week, CBS announced plans to cancel the soap opera As The World Turns, which has been on the air since 1956.

Eileen Fulton has played the character "Lisa" on the show since 1960. And Lisa is definitely a character: She's been married nine times, widowed several times over, divorced again and again.

But when she started on the show 49 years ago, Fulton was supposed to be "a sweet little girl next-door," she tells guest host Ari Shapiro.

Send Soap to SAVE OUR SOAP!

We have updated our strategy. Please read the latest post for the current plans. Newest post.

An idea has cropped up that we love but need to know who is willing to participate. The idea is to send bars of soap to P&G to tell them we want a new home to save our soap. Some suggested CBS but that is really a lost cause. Our best hope is pushing P&G to make sure they aren't just giving us lip service and they really are looking for a new home for As the World Turns.

We would set a target date for sometime in January so we all send the soap at the same time. We highly recommend making it a P&G brand which would be Ivory, Camay, Olay, Old Spice, Safeguard, and Zest. We need to get an idea if people would really be willing to do this. There are a lot of groups out there with efforts to save the show and we would all need to combine on this. P&G would laugh at a few hundred bars of soap but with thousands, they would know we are serious.

I know most of us will treasure every moment there is left should we not be successful in our efforts to find a new home. The one thing that can help the most though is to get those ratings up to make the show more attractive or to let them know we are willing to watch online. We need numbers to back up how high the audience is.

Especially if you are a Nielsen family, be sure to watch on your TV. Unfortunately there probably aren't a lot of us that are Nielsen families so we don't get our viewing counted. However we can increase the online viewing.

If you live in the US and even if you have watched the show on TV, please be sure to stream it daily on your computer and do that from one of the authorized CBS sites. While we've all done it, please don't just watch edited clips on YouTube. Those numbers don't count. It's important to have our numbers count. As mad as we may be at CBS, we need to have our online viewing numbers count. We need to let potential advertisers know we are willing to watch and support the show online. So please watch daily at one of these sites: CBS.com TV.com MSN Fancast

As fans of As the World Turns, we were all heartbroken with the news that CBS has decided to cancel ATWT as of September 2010. However the official word from P&G and TeleNext is they are looking for a new home. We've posted a few of the articles in the blog to refer to where they make that commitment.

This is a grass roots effort to hold them to their commitment of finding a new home of As the World Turns. It's easy to be pessimistic because the same was said about Guiding Light and it didn't happen. However time is on our side as ATWT got more notice. We know nothing will happen though if there is not enough fan support. That is important both so P&G and TeleNext know we'll follow wherever ATWT goes and also it's important to any other prospective home that they can be assured we will continue to support ATWT if they welcome us into their home. Nothing ventured; nothing gained.

So please join in our effort and help with your support and help spread the word. Please read the posts and watch the action list on the side bar for important links and tasks of what you can do to help. And very importantly please feel free to share your ideas. All are very welcome. We're in this together!

We've got the basics but are always looking for new and creative ideas, so if you have some please post them in the comments.

We will be making more postcards but there are some people out there that are excellent at this so if you are good with graphics and can help, please send us a link to your work so we can add it to the site. Contact Us with the link.

We would love to create some viral videos along the line of what Pratt Falls did but we need some creative writers. We can even produce it for you, but need help with the writing. We want it to stay positive about finding a new home. This isn't the time to point fingers. However we need it to also be humorous with snappy dialog. If you think you can help, please Contact Us.

Mvid makers we could use your help in doing some promotional type mvids to support finding a new home for As the World Turns. We will be setting up a YouTube channel and if you send us the link, we will add your videos to the playlist. We can also feature different fideos here from time to time.

With the immortal words "Good morning, dear," actress Helen Wagner (Nancy Hughes) opened the CBS soap opera 'As the World Turns' on April 1, 1956. Alas, in light of the show's cancellation on Dec. 8, longtime soap fans are wondering if they'll be saying, "Good-bye, dear," to the beloved daytime genre entirely.

Martha Byrne, who played Lily for over 20 years on 'As the World Turns,' counters that working moms are still watching daytime. "I'm a working mom and I have been my whole life," the actress says. "I make sure I find time to watch 'Y&R'; my friends do, too. They watch SOAPnet. They like having the freedom to watch after their kids have gone to bed."

Given that shift in viewership, the future of soaps may ultimately lie in the Web. Byrne is one of a handful of actresses who've created Web soap operas. Her program 'Gotham' utilizes familiar faces from daytime, as does Chappell's 'Venice.' "I certainly think that we're going to see more shows pop up on the Web," says Chappell, who hastens to add, "I'm not convinced that daytime network TV won't survive. It'll have to tweak itself and do it for less money."

NEW YORK (CBS) ―It's the end of an era, and for many soap opera fans, the end of a wonderful world. The long-running daytime drama chronicling the ups and downs of life in the fictional town of Oakdale is pulling up stakes, and experts say the move could mark a trend that sees television soaps adapt to the digital world.

Gone, yet Soap Opera Digest said don't count the genre out.

"People are already starting Web soaps, that's just in its infancy. We're gonna see where it goes," said Leahey. "It has to be turned into a business model. I do think there's huge potential there. I think if we can deliver the content where people are instead of expecting them to sit in front of their TVs, there's hope."

P&G's 'As the World Turns' canceled

Procter & Gamble, which invented the "soap opera," will no longer produce daytime serials next year with CBS' announcement Tuesday that it will cancel "As The World Turns."

"This is definitely the end of an era," says Jeannie Tharrington, P&G spokeswoman. "We've been at this since 1933."

"We didn't anticipate (the cancellation), but we were prepared if it happened," Tharrington says.

The company and producing partner TeleNext Media Inc. will attempt to keep the show in production, as well as revive "Guiding Light," she says. CBS gave P&G nine months' notice this time, compared to only five months for "Guiding Light."

"We have a little more time, so we're more hopeful. We're still exploring options for 'Guiding Light' too," she says.

In prime-time, P&G is down to one show - the 36th annual "People's Choice Awards" Jan. 6 - after producing "Circus of the Stars," TV movies, beauty pageants and ice skating shows in the 1980s and '90s. The company may do more TV next year.

"We do have some things planned for next year, but I can't talk about them yet," she says.

As The World Turns Ends on CBS in September 2010

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- As The World Turns, the long-running daytime drama, will complete its final season on the CBS Television Network in September 2010. CBS has decided not to renew the show for the 2010/2011 broadcast season, thereby ending its 54-year run on the Network.

"Throughout our history, As The World Turns has remained dedicated to sharing compelling stories that have entertained fans for more than five decades," said Executive Producer Chris Goutman. "We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed. It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show's loyal audience."
